Magic Under Glass is Jaclyn Dolamore's first novel, which is surprising. The quality and depth of the characters were worthy of a much more experienced writer. The paranormal intrigue, gothic elements and strong women in the book worked extremely well. The book is about a young girl, Nimira, who has left home to seek her fortune. Unfortunately, the culture of her destination does not value the arts as her homeland does, so her singing earns her pennies and sneers rather than the riches she expected. Nimira has a chance for a new life thanks to a wealthy sorcerer; her job would be simply to sing with a piano playing automaton. However, rumors of the machine coming to life and the mysterious death of her employer's young wife add fear and doubt to what should have been a better life. Then things get even more complicated.
