Wicked; the Life And Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire gives us the background story for the Witch and her friends and family. We get to see the confrontations with Dorothy from a fresh new angle, and see all of the interrelations in a brand new light. Every story has at lease two sides, sometimes even more. Maguire's take on the tale is Clever and packed with satire, cynicism and idealism. One thing to keep in mind about the book is that although the musical was based on it, the two are very different.
