Book Review: The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten by Maureen Fergus and Mike Lowery

The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten is a picturebook written by Maureen Fergus and illustrated by Mike Lowery. The story about a kindergartener that seems to take to school easily and enjoy it. However, her mother is less enthusiastic about the idea of school. When invited to join the class, the mother quickly joins in but has trouble following the classroom rules. The detailed timeline of the day, and description of classroom rules and behavior give a great overview of a day in kindergarten.  The illustrations are colorful and charming, depicting something that can cause fear in those facing the first day of school, and some equally distraught parents, in a way that is honest and non threatening.

I recommend The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten for school, library, and home collections. It can be particularly helpful for children about to start school, and any parents, with some fears about the experience. It is also a wonderful conversation starter about how young students should behave at school, and how much fun they can have there.
