Book Review: Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Lost Adventures)

Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Lost Adventures) is a collection of out-of-print, fan-favorite comics that have previously been published in Nickelodeon Magazine or packaged with the Avatar DVDs. There are also more than seventy new pages of comics included in the volume as well, which brings the total of stories included within this book to twenty six. Many of the artists that worked on the original animated series were a part of the top notch team that created these comics. Each of the stories is only four or five pages, offering insight in what Aang and his friends were doing between other adventures that have been seen in prior comics or on television. I think that this volume is a must have for fans of the original television show and comic, while more casual readers will still enjoy the brief looks into the intelligent and entertaining comic.

The artwork in Avatar: The Last Airbender was fantastic, mainly because a good number of people involved in the original cartoons were involved in the book’s creation. The short comics do not go deep or in depth, but what can you expect from some comics that had previously been distributed as freebies with DVD’s? Some of the stories were very funny, while others simply filled in some time gaps with vignettes. I did like that the book was divided into sections that made a lot of sense with the larger story of Avatar, and made it easy for fans to figure out just when and where some of the comics included fall in the big picture. Readers that as not well versed in the Avatar story can still enjoy some laughs and the artwork, but will find less pleasure in the collection that those that can see the complete picture. Fans of the series should definitely add this book to their collection, while other curious readers might want to peruse a library copy.
